對於浸信會來說,洗禮是人向神承諾的標誌;
對於長老會來說,洗禮是神向人承諾的標誌。
簡單來說,上帝在舊約向亞伯拉罕和他的後代作出應許,並賜下割禮作為立約的印記 (創 17);到新約的時候,上帝向信徒和他們的孩子用同樣的語言、重申了同樣的應許,並賜下洗禮 (徒 2:38-39)。同一個應許貫穿了整本聖經。

應許 = 亞伯拉罕之約 = 加 3:13-14; 創 12, 15, 17
