J. I. Packer 一篇未出版的文章，他於多年前應邀評估 Martyn Lloyd-Jones 鍾馬田 的講道，其中一段如此說：

講道的主要目的是甚麼？我想是這樣的，講道要使人們感知神以及神的同在。正如我之前所述，過去的一年我一直病著，也就有機會、有榮幸去聽別人講道，而不是自己講。在帶病聽道之時，我所尋找、嚮往和渴望的就是這一點。我可以原諒一個人講道講得很糟糕，我也幾乎可以原諒任何其他事情，前提是這個講道的人使我認識到神、餵養我的靈魂。即使他自身有缺陷，但是他若能讓我感覺得到他正在處理一件非常偉大、非常光榮的事情，若能讓我稍微地瞥見神的威嚴與榮耀、我救主基督的愛以及福音的壯麗，我幾乎可以原諒他的一切。如果他做到了這些，那我就欠了他的債，我深深地感謝他。因著在當下為我們所提供的一切，因著在永恆的未來那美好的無限可能性，講道是人能夠從事的最奇異、最激動人心的事情。

“I can forgive a man for a bad sermon, I can forgive the preacher almost anything if he gives me a sense of God, if he gives me something for my soul, if he gives me the sense that, though he is inadequate himself, he is handling something which is very great and very glorious, if he gives me some dim glimpse of the majesty and the glory of God, the love of Christ my Savior, and the magnificence of the Gospel.
