J. I. Packer 一篇未出版的文章，他于多年前应邀评估 Martyn Lloyd-Jones 钟马田 的讲道，其中一段如此说：

他 (Martyn Lloyd-Jones) 惯用的方法就像以赛亚那样：先概述人的自命不凡——在道德、宗教、文化上想像出来的伟大与充足——他就揭穿它们，使人威信扫地，暴露他的软弱、无用、与罪，目的是接着要高举神为独一的救主。钟马田讲章的要旨始终是指出人的渺小与人、神的伟大。

钟马田著，夏蔚译《Preaching and Preachers 讲道与讲道的人》 p. 112-113：

讲道的主要目的是甚么？我想是这样的，讲道要使人们感知神以及神的同在。正如我之前所述，过去的一年我一直病著，也就有机会、有荣幸去听别人讲道，而不是自己讲。在带病听道之时，我所寻找、向往和渴望的就是这一点。我可以原谅一个人讲道讲得很糟糕，我也几乎可以原谅任何其他事情，前提是这个讲道的人使我认识到神、喂养我的灵魂。即使他自身有缺陷，但是他若能让我感觉得到他正在处理一件非常伟大、非常光荣的事情，若能让我稍微地瞥见神的威严与荣耀、我救主基督的爱以及福音的壮丽，我几乎可以原谅他的一切。如果他做到了这些，那我就欠了他的债，我深深地感谢他。因着在当下为我们所提供的一切，因着在永恒的未来那美好的无限可能性，讲道是人能够从事的最奇异、最激动人心的事情。

“I can forgive a man for a bad sermon, I can forgive the preacher almost anything if he gives me a sense of God, if he gives me something for my soul, if he gives me the sense that, though he is inadequate himself, he is handling something which is very great and very glorious, if he gives me some dim glimpse of the majesty and the glory of God, the love of Christ my Savior, and the magnificence of the Gospel.
